Mentoring Philosophy
I have been involved with many educational systems and they all seem to have not changed much over hundreds of years. The world is changing rapidly and I believe that we need to develop a more personalized educational system that better meets the needs of different kinds of students and the challenges of our changing world. My activities have mostly involved working personally with students in accordance with my beliefs on the future of education. I intend to continue this work of personalizing our educational system, which benefits diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as academic performance for all students. The challenges facing humanity require that we utilize the unique contributions of all of the world’s citizens to create a better world.
Testimonials
Xuan Ze Li (Charlie), First year Engineering Science student, UofT, summer research internship, 2020
I would like to give a huge thank you to my supervisor, also my co-worker on this project, Amine Mohamed Aboussalah. Tolerating my ignorance and himself under an extremely intense daily working schedule, he took countless hours out of his time explaining concepts to me, defining goals for each step of our project, providing essential feedback on my work and guiding me on our next steps. Besides, he is also a great friend who is constantly supporting me during my summer learning process. It is my best luck and a great honour to have him as my supervisor in my first research experience and therefore I want to thank him more than 3000 for all he has done for me.
I want to thank Mr. Amine Mohamed Aboussalah for providing and supporting me in this great research project during this summer. It enhances my academic ability and gives me the chance to use quantum physics on optimization problem, which is a hybrid of what I like and what I learned in school. So thanks again. This summer is a great learning experience for me. Amine was friendly, easy-going and an illuminating leader. During our meeting, he will always inspire new ideas out of me and helped me understand the subject better. Plus, his background in physics is amazing and we share huge common interest on physics. Moreover, he is also a fan of football club Barcelona and likes playing soccer, which is same to me. It’s like finding a friend through learning. In a short word, this summer is fruitful.
Huge Thanks to my supervisor Amine Aboussalah, who is so thoughtful on selecting research topics in the first place. I started my university life in engineering science with a strong target in going into financial engineering. It is so exciting and gratifying to work on the project which is directly relating to the field. I am so thankful for my supervisor who provided me this precious experience to learn about finance. I would never encounter and be part of this experience this easy without my supervisor. Also huge thanks for him always being thoughtful and patiently supporting and leading me through the four months. I would never be able to obtain what I have in the end without his support.
I would like to thank my supervisor Amine Aboussalah in this summer project. I was so excited that Amine provided me a nice topic related to optimal stopping and financial engineering. This summer research experience gave me insight into the stochastic optimal control and benefitted me a lot in my graduate school application. Amine is a friendly, enthusiastic person in both research and daily life. He always considered the problem one step ahead and guided me in a promising direction. His suggestions and analysis as well as his feedback promoted my growth in academic research. It is my best luck and honor to work with him in the summer and obtain countless assistance during the whole application season. I would never have such a success without his selfless support. Thanks again.
Our sincere and heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to our supervisor Mr, Amine Mohamed Aboussalah for providing us with the guidance and counsel we needed to succeed in our graduation project. Amine has been a great mentor in explaining to us all key concepts of Reinforcement Learning and related fields, advising on a research topic, connecting us with the resources we need, being always available, and responding to our daily questions. Besides that, he has always been so friendly and supportive of all of our efforts and struggles. Working under his supervision has been very enjoyable and we have learned and grown a lot through our experience together.
We would also like to thank Amine Aboussalah, who is a PhD student under the supervision of Professor Lee, for his invaluable guidance and support throughout the year. He took countless hours out of his time to explain concepts to us, make us aware of interesting new research avenues, and provide feedback on our work. We feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to work with Amine and thank him dearly for all he has done for us.
I will describe Amine from 4 points: as a mentor, as a friend, as a business partner, and as a scientific researcher. First as a mentor. We met in Polytechnique Montreal when I was undergraduate student. I asked his help for some classes and he didn't hesitate to mentor me. He was so skillful from the scientific side that for some courses I wasn't even attending at my boring teachers. Studying alone and asking Amine was more than enough to score A*. More than that, he always challenges me to thing big and compete with top universities level not only with my classmates. Second as a friend. After I graduated we became good friends which allowed me to know him deeper. As a person, he is very supportive, kind, and a FC Barcelona big fan. He is the type of friends that either he gives a help when possible, or he apologies frankly when not possible, but never he hursts people. He has no two faces. Third as a business partner. Amine is very open minded and a good positive criticizer. Every brainstorm with him the debate is spicy because of his new revolutionary ideas that sometimes are orthogonal to what people are used to think. He helped me with to launch 2 businesses until now (2021). The first was not very lucrative but the second is growing that big to have $50k as a weekly turnover! Not bad at all for a new starting business. Finally, Amine as a scientific researcher. For people who can understand it "He is a major league player." His real deep goal in life is not to be the best famous professor in the world, but his dream is "to leave life while being the least ignorant possible, and to push the wall of science some steps forward for the benefit of all humanity"
